Why Independent Repair Shops Are Better Than Big Chains

There are many reasons why you may want to consider looking into an independent repair shop instead of going with a bigger chain. An independent repair shop is one that has no ties to any dealerships and is only in one location. These are very common in smaller towns that do not have a lot of bigger named businesses nearby. You will find that while there are a lot of reasons why these types of shops can be a lot more beneficial, there are still a few things that you should keep in mind whenever you are trying to decide if they are right for you.

Why Independent Repair Shops Are Better Than Big Chains

Price

You will find that the biggest benefit that comes with an independent shop is that they are typically less expensive. Bigger shops will end up having a set price no matter how big the job; you will normally have to pay a base amount just for bringing your vehicle in. With an independent shop, it is usually a case by case basis. Many of these independent shop owners will provide people that are loyal to them a better deal because they know they can keep them around by doing this. They may even be more likely to throw in something free later on. However, this is something that you cannot expect with a bigger chain.

Ask Around

Something that you should always make sure to do is ask around. This is something that is especially true whenever you live in a smaller area. Everybody at some point will need to have their vehicle worked on for some reason or another. What this basically means is that a lot of people will have experience on who is a better mechanic and who will end up charging more or less for something. You will need to make sure that you ask around to a few different people to see if they can tell you anything. Go to your local auto parts store and ask them if they can refer you to somebody. They most likely deliver to every single mechanic within a 10 to 20 mile radius.

Considerations

It is important that you pay attention to whether or not the mechanic that you go with is one that is ASE certified. This is something that you typically do not have to worry about whenever you are working with a bigger chain. Most mechanics that have an independently owned shop will be ASE certified, but it is still a good idea to make completely sure before you go with them. It is also important that you know what the prices are before you decide on them. Make a deal and talk about the price beforehand to make sure that they are not going to try to overcharge you for something that you are not comfortable with. Try to get it in writing before you have them do any work on your vehicle to make sure that they will not be able to overcharge you very easily.…

5 Steps to Help Determine If Being a Mechanic Is Right for You

Have you ever thought about becoming a mechanic, but aren’t sure if it’s right for you? Here are five easy steps you can take to make sure that an exciting career as an automotive mechanic (also known as an Automotive Technician) is right for you.

STEP 1 – Decide what your lifestyle needs will be

Firstly, think about the kind of lifestyle you’re looking for. How much money do you need to pay for the kind of expenses you can expect to have? The word “expect” here is very important: since you’re looking at a career move, you can’t base your decision on your current financial commitments. Instead, look at your future expected needs. Fortunately, most auto mechanics make between $45,000 and $70,000 a year in Toronto, which is above the Canadian average.

STEP 2 – Talk to other mechanics

If you have a friend (or a friend of a friend) who’s a mechanic, ask them if you can spend a bit of time with them to learn more about the job. Ask them what a typical day is like for an automotive technician. Ask them about the challenges of the automotive industry. Ask them about the good, the bad, and the ugly – and use that to help you make your decision.

STEP 3 – Find out about jobs in your area

Think about where you want to work. If you don’t want to commute, are there a lot of garages in near your home that could be hiring auto mechanics? Pretend you already have an automotive technology diploma, and you’re looking for a job. Take a look at the job sites and see if there are any openings in your target area for mechanic jobs. Fortunately, if you live in Toronto, your chances of finding a job are probably better than most areas simply because the greater Toronto area has a very dense population and a large number of garages.

STEP 4 – Spend some time in a garage

The best way to find out if being a mechanic is right for you is to spend a bit of time in a garage. Walk in to your local garage and talk to the manager to find out if they would be OK with you shadowing a mechanic for a day and helping out if you can (free of charge, of course) in exchange for the opportunity to see what it’s like being an automotive technician. You wouldn’t believe what you’ll learn.

STEP 5 – Apply to a diploma program

If you’ve done steps 1 to 4 and you think that a career as a mechanic is right for you, then apply to an Automotive Service Technician Diploma and start taking some courses to learn the details of the position. As you’re trained, you’ll quickly find out if you have the aptitude to be a mechanic.

By following these simple steps, you’ll quickly find out if a career as an auto mechanic is the right one for …

Portrait of a Taxi Company

Taxi companies are part of small and large communities. They can be as small as one or two cars or big enough to have their own fleet with support staff including a mechanic with automotive technician training. Usually they are controlled by local laws that can effect both driver and vehicle, and what sort of profit can be made.

Laws and Regulations

Some cities regulate the look of their taxis, perhaps requiring a particular style of vehicle, while others are content to simply post a sign on the top of the cab. Some municipalities require special exams for the drivers and limit the pool of available taxi licences, while others permit anyone who can demonstrate that level of driving ability to take on the job. For the safety of passengers as well as a cap on competition, there’s usually some sort of fare control.

Inside the Cab

A taxi can be privately owned, or belong to the company. Taxi drivers might be paid by the hour or by commission. Some cars, if they belong to the company, are on the road pretty much all hours of the day and just swap off drivers. If a driver has a fixed vehicle however, that’s just like their office. They may decorate it with items that make them feel at home and even take naps between fares. Drivers have a solid background in road skills, which means they are generally either people with transport operations training, for example retired truck drivers, or newcomers to the country.

For ease of use, the cab will be clearly labeled with its status as a taxi. This might just be a lit sign that goes on the top of the cab, or decals for the door. There will also be signs posted for fares, for the reassurance of people unfamiliar with the service. Modern cabs often have a GPS mapping system and all cabs will have a radio.

Home Base

Each taxi can be considered almost like an ant in an ants nest. Though of course there are good drivers and bad, they are intentionally interchangeable, and they would be nothing without a home hive to keep them co-ordinated. They rely on at least one person with dispatcher training and a good map of the city. Individual cab drivers will generally get a good feel for the locations they visit, but the home office is their point of reference, not just for landmarks but local place name changes. It’s not uncommon for a street or venue to have changed names over the course of several decades and for passengers to ask for places by the old name. In case of confusion, the driver will radio in and get better instructions to take the fare on their way.…

Car Accessories: Door Wind Deflectors

Believe it or not summer is almost with us. Those long hot days where you spend hours in the car sat in traffic jams on the way to a day at the seaside or in a queue on your way to work, only to arrive and find that the rest of the country has had exactly the same idea. There are no parking places within 5 miles of the sea front and to top it all the weather has closed in and you are surrounded by a thick sea fog. Oh to be in England now that summer is here, or not.

One thing is for sure driving along on a sunny day can be made a lot more pleasurable by fitting a set of wind deflectors to the doors of your vehicle. Quick and easy to fit, the acrylic wind deflectors are designed to fit into the wind channels of the doors. Held in place using the friction of the tight fit, the deflectors do not prevent the windows operating as normal and can be left in place once fitted. Designed to help reduce the levels of wind noise and turbulence you experience when travelling with your windows down.

In most cases deflectors are only available for the front door of the vehicle. The theory being that as the wind hits the front wind deflector it is pushed away from the side of the car, it is then not able to divert back to the side of the car until the rear window has passed the gap that has been created. So the rear windows will also benefit from reduced turbulence and noise when a front set of wind deflectors is fitted. Some manufacturers however do offer wind deflectors for the rear doors.

The wind deflectors do not completely eliminate the wind noise and turbulence but they do significantly reduce their levels. With the reduction of turbulence comes a reduction in noise within the vehicle. Making conversation easier and listening to music easier, as well as a more peaceful ride. The wind deflectors will also deflect small amounts of rain. Allowing you to leave the windows open even if the rain starts to fall. Something as we all know that is very rare in this country during the summer.

As always, it is important to remember that there are things that we can change about our vehicles to make our journeys more comfortable, all it takes is a little research.…
