Paranormal - Something that is beyond the range of normal human experience or scientific explanation.

Ghost - A form of apparition (See Apparition), usually the visual appearance of a deceased human's spirit soul.  Those that are photographed appear in several ghostly forms.  The more common form of appearance is Orbs, followed by Ghost mist or Fog, Ghost Lights, Orbs in Motion, Vortex, Supercharged Orbs, Transparent Apparitions and finally Full Fledge Apparitions.

Orb - An orb is a sphere like object, usually in a transparent state.  Each Orb is believed to represent a single living soul of a deceased person.  The common color they appear is a soft transparent white.  However they have been photographed in several colors, such as blue, red, yellow, etc.  Orbs are generally captured on photos only.  However, there does seem to be a connection to ghost lights and orbs.  This would mean that the ghost lights are that of orbs being seen with the naked eye.

Ghost Light - A ghost light is a light visible to the naked eye.  It is seen traveling in flight in a conscious manner, giving the appearance of intelligence.  They have been known to have a heat source when a person gets close to them.  They give off a feeling of a presence being near.  They vary in size and color.  It is also believed to represent the living soul of a deceased person.

Ghost Mist/Fog - This is a fog/mist appearance that shows up on photographs and is not visible to the naked eye.  A feeling of a presence, cold chill, smell, and phantom footsteps are some of the senses that can be felt prior to capturing these phenomena on photos.  It is believed to represent the gathering of spirits in one area.  This could be two or more spirits in a single location, emitting fog or mist type energy around where they are.

Supercharged or Orb in Motion - These are close to the same so are included in one definition.  Supercharged Orbs appear to be several orbs that come together and produce a shooting like motion that seem to erupt from the central location, each moving in a different direction.  They are only visible in a photograph and have been photographed in several colors.  The Orb in motion is just about the same thing, but it is one orb that is captured in motion.  Usually leaving a contrail (Comet Tail) and the tail is captured in the photograph.  They can be seen in a variety of colors.

Vortex - This is one of the most misused definitions in the Ghost Hunters World.  The appearance of a vortex is captured on photograph.  It can appear in several shapes.  One resembles a telephone cord, another a twisted Birthday Streamer, ropes, striped ropes, or smooth tubular shapes.  All of them usually come in a variety of brilliant colors.

Apparition - An apparition is visible to both the naked eye and on photographs.  It is the appearance of a ghostly shaped person either transparent or full fledge.  Full Fledge is looking like you and I.  Apparitions seem to have intelligence and a conscience.  The apparition can and often do interact with the person that sees it.  However, sometimes no communication is made and the apparition just stands and watches.

Residual Haunt - This type of haunt is much like that of a video tape.  It generally occurs at the same time every time and is the same scene over and over.  There will be no interaction for the spirits don't even see you.  Like a video tape, you watch the movie, rewind it, then watch it again.  Nothing in the movie ever changes; it is always the same thing.  Nothing you can say or do can change the movie.  These are basically impressions in time that has imprinted itself in the atmosphere of the place that's haunted.  These hauntings usually involve a visual sighting of a past traumatic event that occurred at that location.  This is only a piece of time.

Classic Haunt - The spirit of a once living person, that for some reason did not cross over at the moment of death.  Unlike a Residual Haunt, the Classic Haunt involves a spirit that can interact with you and vice versa.  However, the spirit cannot always be seen, for a classic haunt involves all of our senses, i.e. smell, touch, sounds, and sight.  You could smell the perfume that the person once wore in the living years; a rush of cold air as the spirit nears you; a strong feeling of someone watching you or in the room with you; a slight touch on your shoulder by unseen hands; phantom voices and sounds.

Poltergeist - (German for "Noisy Ghost") This is a non-human spirit or entity, usually more malicious and destructive than the traditional ghost.  Another belief is that the Poltergeist is a series of events that appear to be that of ghosts, but are generated within the depths of the mind (Repressed psycho kinetic energy) of, usually a young woman.  These events are generated without the woman's awareness to what she is doing.  Some common activities to poltergeist include thumping, moving objects, banging, stone-throwing and starting fires.

Supernatural - Something that exists or occurs through some means other than any known force in nature.  As opposed to paranormal, the term "supernatural" often denotes divine or demonic intervention.

EVP - (Electronic Voice Phenomena) The capture of spirit voices on magnetic tape as an audio recording.  Many times, no sound is heard while the tape is recording.  It's only upon playback that the harsh, hushed voices can be heard.
