Portrait of the Long-Bell Family Picnic in 1925

Brief Property Description:

The Longview Mansion was built in 1914 by Robert A. Long, a millionaire lumberman in Kansas City, for his daughter Lula Long Combs. Between 1913 and June 1, 1914, 50 other structures were also built upon the 1,780 acre farm. These structures consisted of a show horse arena and racetrack, horse and dairy barns, greenhouses, a school and a church. Approximately 200 people lived and worked on the farm. The buildings were constructed by more than 50 Belgian craftsmen and 200 Sicilian stonemasons along with 2,000 workers. The Longview property became known as "The World's Most Beautiful Farm."

Mr. Long was born in 1851 and died in 1934. His family home was located in Kansas City, Missouri and is now called Corinthian Hall.

Lula Long Combs was born in 1881 and died in 1971. She was an internationally renowned horsewoman. She won prizes in the United States and Europe. She became known as the "Queen of the American Royal" and entertained audiences as she repeatedly won competitions throughout her life.

Longview Mansion is being completely restored and is currently used to host many events such as weddings, tours and special events. 17 of its buildings are listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Portrait of Lula Combs

Current Reportings:

? A designer's showcase was held at Longview Mansion during the 1980's in which individual designers were assigned rooms to remodel. In the master bedroom, which was once the bedroom of Lula Combs, they would find the bed rumpled every morning.

? A security guard who was working at the Longview Mansion had several experiences which included seeing the apparition of a woman float down the hall. One of his jobs was to make sure that all of the doors upstairs were shut. He often found them open after checking earlier that they were closed. He also experienced several cold spots and the smell of perfume.

The only room in the mansion in which the decor remains from the designer showcase.

Reported Findings and Experiences:

? A tape recorder was set up in the northeast bedroom which was believed to be the bedroom that Lula Combs stayed in while she was in a coma for several months prior to her death. An EVP was recorded in this room which sounds like a female voice singing. There were also several recordings on the tape which sounded as if boxes or furniture were being moved across the floor.

? Several orbs were recorded in the ballroom. Both Joyce and Misty felt that these orbs were the spirit dogs of Lula Combs coming out to play.

? Most of the orb photos were taken in the library and in the attic.

Psychic Readings:

JOYCE

2nd Floor

? Someone walked up to me and said, "Hello, my name is David." I don't know why but he acted as if he belonged here.

? I see two children in Lula's life that meant a lot to her. Did she have children? Lula Long's sister had 2 children and Lula was quite fond of them according to the Mansion Historian.

? She was ill for quite some time before she died she tells me. She got sick in the 1960's.

? Something didn't go like she wanted with the sale of land that was sold in 1971. She was upset about it, she says. Other than that, she felt very good about everything around her.

? She keeps showing me her mother. Her mother was a tall slender woman with dark hair. I keep seeing this lady in and out of her life. I don't see very much of the father around. I do see her horses though, they are here in spirit.

? I have done so many houses where each room has something to tell me, but here, it's so pleasant and quiet that I'm not picking up much.

? Was there anywhere here where there was a Kindergarten? She's showing me a classroom of some kind, somewhere.

? The vibrations just aren't here. It could be the pain medications I'm on but I'm just not picking up much. I'm not getting a lot of conversation, I'm not getting complaints, I'm not getting anything like that. This has never happened to me before but it's just so peaceful and wonderful here.

? This room had dogs and puppies in it. Joyce was in the bridal room which used to be the "dog room." Lula had a room on the 2nd floor that was set up as a bedroom for her dogs. I see a little dark haired girl playing with the puppies. This was her sister's daughter. Her sister's name was Sally, wasn't it? The Mansion Historian confirmed the sister's name as Sally.

? Her folks did not live here. Their ancestors were English.

? Did Lula ever have to have surgery on her right arm? She shows me her arm between her wrist and elbow. There was something wrong with her arm.

? Earlier I picked up a woman that worked here. She was black. Do you know if there were any servants or not? I'm picking up a black lady that helped with the house and a black man that helped with the horses. There was a picture taken of everybody and they were in the picture. These two black people were married. He was a good horse man.

? Do you know if one of her horses was buried here? The Mansion Historian confirmed that a horse was buried outside the arena. There were two of them buried there. One was a colt.

? She will always be around this area, in and out.

? Do you know if they are getting ready to sell off more of the land associated with this property? I see some papers being drawn up that have the year 2008 on them.

? A woman came in and said, "Hello, my name is Margaret." She may have been a friend that Lula traveled with.

? Lula said to tell you (the historian) that you're doing a good job, so evidently she checks in to see how things are going with the property.

The Groom's Room

Basement

? I see a child riding their tricycle down here. This was one of Sally's children.

? They used to keep the vegetables down here because it was cool.

? I see an old fashioned wheelchair. There is a man in it who has his leg wrapped from the knee down. They would wheel him in and out of here from an outside entrance. I don't know why they brought him in here or why I'm seeing this, but I see him for some reason. It's not bad or anything. He didn't die in here.

? This was a busy place down here.

**Joyce became ill during this investigation due to her own health problems and was unable to continue her reading.

MISTY

Kitchen

? There was a female worker in here who was kind of cranky. She was a very busy person and she'd get upset real easily. She would become cranky wherever there were big parties. She used to cool her pies on the porch just outside the kitchen door. Her name was Anna. She was the head lady in the kitchen.

Dining Room

? Lula didn't like eating a big breakfast before riding her horses in the morning. She preferred to have brunch.

Basement

? I don't feel anything down here at all, nothing negative, nothing positive.

? Lula's not haunting the place. She just comes in and out to keep an eye on the place.

2nd Floor – Dog Room

? There used to be a bed in this room. This is the room Lula hung out in the most. She loved this room because she could see her horses from here. This is where she spent most of her time and the room she comes back to when she comes to visit. There was an older woman who stayed here with her.

2nd Floor – West Porch

? There are some horses buried in a flat field out here and there are some dogs buried beneath a tree.

? Did she have a miscarriage or lose a child? She wanted children but she looked upon her horses and dogs as her kids.

? She had a broken arm. She said it was from doing a dumb stunt. An older stableman named Joe told her not to do it but she did it anyway. She broke her collar bone and had to sit out one summer. She was upset about that. Both Misty and Joyce picked up an injury to Lula's arm.

2nd Floor, West Porch

Master Bedroom

? She was in the bathroom when she had bad, bad chest pains. She became nauseous and dizzy and walked out into the hallway where she collapsed. This is when they found out she had a heart problem.

Maid's Room

? This is a sad room. My head hurts in here. I feel dizzy and sick in here.

Lula's Death Room- Northeast Bedroom

? She may have died in this room but her essence isn't here. She doesn't come back to this room when she comes back to visit.

Attic

? These rooms were used as servant's quarters. There is nothing spooky or bad. No one is haunting up here.

? When Lula is here, she hangs out mostly in the library and the dog room. She's not haunting the place she just comes back to visit. She felt more comfortable with her animals than she did with people.

MPR SUMMARY

? Neither of our psychics were able to pick up on any active earthbound ghosts at the mansion. Other than a few orb photos, MPR did not capture enough evidence to substantiate that a haunting is occurring. Lula visits in spirit as does other spirits who have good memories there but they are not earthbound. There does seem to be some animal spirits that still linger.

It is possible that Lula may have hung around for a time after her death, concerned about the condition of the home, etc, which would account for the sightings and experiences that occurred in the 1980's. But apparently she is happy with the outcome and only returns occasionally to check up on things.

MPR would like to thank Brad (the mansion historian) for allowing us the opportunity to investigate this beautiful and historic mansion. It is a lovely home and we were quite amazed at how spacious it was. It's definitely worth paying a visit.
