 Brief Property Description:

518 West Reed

The building at 518 W. Reed Street was purchased by its current owners in 2003. The upstairs was completely unfurnished when it was purchased and was used as a living quarters by the owners during renovations. It appears as if the building had been added on to at least two different occasions. The building is at least 100 years old but the current owners have only been able to trace back its history to a dry cleaning business in the 1920’s. A mortuary and funeral home occupied the adjacent buildings to the east. A house existed on the property until at least 1915. Research by the owners indicate that the house  was used as a private residence during that time and not as a business. The building has been used for various businesses including a woman’s clothing store.

213 West Reed

It is unknown exactly how old the building located at 213 W. Reed is, but it was in existence in 1895 when it was occupied by a dry goods and men's clothing store. An optometrist named Dr. Carpenter opened an office and jewelry store there in 1910. It has housed many different businesses including a hardware store in the 1950’s and early 1960’s which was owned and operated by one of the currents owners father.

Current Reportings:

518 W. Reed

+ Owner saw apparition of a man at the store located peering at him from around the staircase wall.

+ Employees have reported seeing and hearing things they could not explain.

+ Owner receives uneasy feelings around the stairway and hallway downstairs.

+ There have been a few occasions where the water or lights have been found on it the bathroom resulting in each owner accusing the other of leaving them on.

+ One of the owners experienced very strange dreams while sleeping upstairs.

+ Feelings of being followed up the stairway.

+ One of the owners refuses to be in the store by himself after dark.

+ A customer reported feeling like someone was tugging on the back of her coat upstairs. She indicated that it felt like a child.

The stairway leading to the 2nd floor of the mall.

The hallway on the 1st floor of the mall.

213 W. Reed

+ One of the owners heard a female voice say either “Oh” or “No” as he walked through one of the doorways.

+ Unexplained thumping noises have been recorded on the security camera.

+ A large tarp covering building materials appeared as if someone was trying to go underneath it, lifting up and making a rustling sound as they did so.

+ Owner noted a metal sculpture shaking while he was watching television.

+ Lights have been turned on and off when no one was in the building.

An orb is photographed at 213 W. Reed in the room where both Misty and Joyce detected a female presence. An orb is photographed in the alleyway behind 213 W. Reed where Misty felt that a man still lingered after being murdered there.

Reported Findings and Experiences:

+ Linda reported the sensation of being tapped on the shoulder several times while she was upstairs.

+ Several team members reported seeing movement in an area of the store upstairs where no one was at the time.

+ Several photos taken upstairs showed an unexplained green mist hovering near the ceiling. These photos were taken and examined by a professional photographer who could offer no explanation for the effect. Light sources have been ruled out.

+ 3 EVPs were recorded during Misty’s reading. See “Psychic Reading/Misty” for details.

+ Both Misty and Joyce detected that the building at 518 W. Reed was haunted by an adult male, an adult female and a male child. Their readings were conducted separately.

+ All team members reported a heavy sensation while walking up the staircase.

+ Videos placed upstairs and in the stairway of the store located at 518 W. Reed filmed several orbs which seemed to travel in different directions.

+ Orbs were also filmed in the main room of the store located at 213 W. Reed.

The following 2 photos were taken by Linda Wall, a professional photographer who accompanied us on this investigation.  These photos were taken upstairs at the mall while Misty was feeling the presences of an older man and young boy. Linda edited the original photographs to try to explain the green mist-like faces and to help rule out camera movement. She came up with no explanation for these 2 photographs. Both the original photos and their edited versions are shown below.

Unedited photo of green mist which resembles a chubby-cheeked face.

Edited version of photo on the left.. Notice that there appears to be no blurring of the person in the right of the photo nor of  the other visible objects.

Unedited photo of green mist which appears like it could possibly be a profile of a face and upper torso.

Edited version of the photo on the left. Unfortunately this photo does not show any other visible objects.

Psychic Readings:

(Joyce and Misty did their readings separately. Norman accompanied Joyce while Carson accompanied Misty.)

JOYCE

213 Reed Street

+I have a really great feeling here.

+ Do you know rather this was a doctor’s office or not? Norman indicated that he thought the building once housed an optometry practice. I feel that the doctor was in here during the early 1900’s. I see the year 1910. This building is older than that, maybe it built in the 1880’s.

+ There is a man here that I could see at the back of the room when I came in. He’s a tall slender black man and he was a janitor or something here.

+ I also feel that if you go back into the history of this building that you’ll find a man was killed in here. He either had a stroke or he was shot in the head during the 1800’s. I see that this building was also some kind of store lined with shelves and I’m picking up this man in association with that. It was either a hardware store or a dry goods store or something like that. Norman’s father owned and operated a hardware store there during the 1950’s and early 1960’s and earlier records indicated that the building was once a dry goods store. I’m not feeling a drug store but I’m not sure about that. At one time the back was shut off and they used only the front of the building.

+ As you go towards the back the vibrations pick up. As you walk back here there is a woman in a long dress with puffy sleeves and black hair pulled back in a knot. She is a very distinguished looking lady. Norman informed Joyce that he heard a female voice say “Oh” or “No” one time when he walked through the area. The back half of the store was used as a living quarters. I’m not sure if they actually lived there but used it more for a place to come back and sit. I’m picking this up during the early 1900’s.

+ Do you know if at anytime if this was a drug store with a fountain in it?

+ There are many spirits here but they are all good. I see Christmas here, I see Thanksgiving here, I see that this building was used for a long time until recently when the people went out of business.

+Is there a bank next door? Norman informed Joyce that the building was once used as a Title Company. Okay, that must be what I’m picking up but that was probably in the 1940’s.

+ They are not giving me their names.

+ I’m seeing that the front half of this building was used as a floral shop at one time.

+ The woman that I saw liked this place. She had so much of herself in this building. Once you finished your renovations you will probably smell her perfume. It’ll be a jasmine smell. She used jasmine in her hair and in the soap she used.

+ I see a lot of children playing through here. They didn’t die here or anything, their essence is just here.

+ There is a lot going on back here in the alley. There was a house of ill-repute close by which was frequented by the railroad men.

Antique Mall 518 Reed Street

+ There is a man here named Frank. He was from the Civil War era and died in a house that used to sit on this site. He liked the home so well that he decided to stay here after his death.

+ There is also a young boy about 11 years old that is here. I feel that he died with pneumonia in the early 1900’s. He died upstairs. He spent a lot of time at the store. He wears the shirts and britches that they wore in the early 1900’s.

+ Frank has a beard, a big heavy beard. He has a big face and real thick dark hair.

+ This is really a busy place.

+ I’m seeing a woman in a real pale blue dress, high collar, long sleeves, long skirt and she wears lots of gold jewelry. She was a rich lady. I’m seeing her around here.

+ Is there a basement under this building? I’m seeing a fire somewhere in a basement. Norman indicated that there was no basement under the building at 518 but he thought there was a fire in the basement of the building at 213 Reed. That would have happened in 1910. I’m feeling there was a drug store there in the 30’s or 50’s, along in that time frame. I’m feeling a soda counter.

+ Every booth as some interesting vibrations. I just get name after name after name with all the different items.

Upstairs

+ I’m being bombarded with people, a lot of people.

+ I see a man. I think this man is Frank and he had an accident involving his right arm. The collar bone, the shoulder bone, and the lower bone of his arm were broken. I can see him in an old-fashioned cast. He’s a little bit angry. His eyes are dark brown. He’s introducing me to a man with dark eyes and dark hair and he says his name is Carl. He says he was killed in an accident along the railroad in 1884.

+ I see a family and big, beautiful black horses pulling a buggy. They are out along the street. I don’t know why this vision is coming to me. This man comes to me and tells me his name is Harold and his wife’s name is Edith. Their son’s name is Benjamin. He’s actually showing me their tombstones with their names on it. I feel that they died in the winter. I’m seeing the winter of 1881 or 1891. He keeps pointing at it as if there is a message. Edith died in childbirth, giving birth to a daughter. He and the boy got some kind of disease. He keeps saying they were misdiagnosed with what they died of. They lived in the house or an apartment here. He played the fiddle. His last name was Streeter.

+ The picture of the man I see here, I get the name Carl Dansbury. He did not live here. He lived in another town.

+ I’m seeing a lady here now that is lying in a bed on her back. She had back problems and was paralyzed in one leg. She had to be helped. Her name is Elizabeth .

+ There are lots of names coming in, one right after another with all of this stuff.

+ I’m getting vibrations with this suitcase. It was a woman’s suitcase who did lots of traveling. She traveled overseas a lot, to England and Japan . I feel somewhere around the1940’s. Her name was Jenice. Jenice Bargery or Bargarary.

+ When I first come up the stairs I kept feeling there was a doorway that had caskets behind it. I don’t know why they would be up here. It was revealed that the building next door used to be a mortuary and that the building on the other side of it was a used as a funeral home. I think they may have stored some caskets in this building also.

+ The woman with the back problem was named Alice .

MISTY

Antique Mall 518 Reed Street

Upstairs

+ I see a lot of people walking along side outside this building like there was an alleyway or something here. Misty was told that the building next door was used as a mortuary and funeral home.

+ There is one piece of furniture in the store that belonged to a couple who lived and died in this town.

+ There are two males and a woman haunting this building. There is also a small child.

+ Ruth Ann is the name a female here. She did not live in the house that was here. She lived a few blocks over. She has gone into the light. There are a few items in this store that belonged to her. She is in a photograph that is a picture of people in the town. She says it’s this picture. (Misty stopped at a picture of a celebration on Reed Street .) She said there will be two little girls and that she’ll be standing off to the side of them. She says she will be looking at the two girls and that she’s facing them. Two little girls were found in the photo but she was unable to identify the woman.

+ Is there a family named Mottely or Morley here? I’m getting the name Samuel Jackson Mottely or Morley.

+ I’m feeling the male energy now. He was associated with the house that was here. It was almost like a 3 story house, 2 stories with an attic or dormer. There should be a picture of it somewhere.

+ A lot of the energy you feel over here is coming from next door. One was a tractor accident, he didn’t know it even happened, it happened so fast. Another one died of an illness in the 1930’s.

+ The child is a boy and he feels more like a recent death. He has nothing to do with the store. He’s looking for someone.

+ There is a big energy shift when you walk to the front of the store. This was the area of the store where Carson reported having strange dreams and difficulty sleeping.

+ The little boy is not here all the time.

+ The man with the farming accident. There is so much vibration in here from someone’s essence.

+ Misty began following someone and said, “Come here.” This was followed by an EVP of a male voice saying what sounds like, Tell them we’re here.” Then Misty said The little bitty one, it was the kid. He said, “Here girl, I’m here.” Carson reported that the hair was standing up on his arms. He was here but he took off so quickly. Is there too many people? This was followed by what sounds like a child’s voice saying, Girl.” Misty then asked Carson if his hair was still standing up and he replied, “No.” He just went out the door. He’s running from us. He might be afraid of all the people. (Full recording of "Tell them we're here." and "Girl"

+ There are 4 ghosts here for sure. The man is here all the time. The others come and go.

The little boys name I’m getting like Burney, Barnard, Barney. It could be a last name.

+ I feel the house might have been associated with the funeral home.

213 Reed Street

+ There is a woman in here and I’m picking up the name Mary.

+ Can you find out if there was a murder back here in the alleyway? Somebody was killed here. I hear a man out here. There was someone killed in this alleyway before all this stuff was here. He haunts the place.

+ Was there prostitution, gambling and racketeering going on back here? That’s probably what happened. He was stabbed over money. This whole area was open then and that’s where the gambling and some of the prostitution comes in. Owner’s grandfather used to tell him about the gambling that occurred in the building.

+ Misty was having problems with her camera in the alleyway. After coming back inside she began working on her camera. An EVP was recorded at this time of a male voice saying what sounds like, Keep Her Here.”

+ I just feel the woman and the man who was murdered down here. I can’t get the man’s name. He says he drug him to someplace near a creek or river and buried him there.

+ I’m feeling a lot of hustle and bustle in the town.

+ The man that was murdered, he wasn’t a local.

This investigation report would not be complete without including a photo of the malls life-size cutout of the "Maytag Man." He managed to quicken our heartbeats several times when we came upon him unknowingly in the dark.

MPR  SUMMARY

After reviewing the evidence and psychic readings conducted at both buildings, MPR does believe that they are both haunted.

At 518 W. Reed, both Misty and Joyce detected the presence of a male whom probably occupied the house that once existed on the property. They also both detected the presence of a woman upstairs and a young boy. EVPs recorded seem to support the presence of the male and young boy.

At 213 W. Reed, Misty and Joyce both detected the presence of a woman. Misty also felt that a man who was murdered in the alleyway behind the store haunts the alleyway and sometimes comes into the building. Joyce did not go into the alley during her reading so we do not know if she would have detected the same energy.

There were slight variations in the names and eras of the ghosts given by Misty and Joyce during their readings, but the fact that the readings were conducted separately and both detected the same energies lends probability to the presences of at least 4 ghosts within the two buildings.

MPR would like to thank Carson, Norman and their staff for inviting us to do this investigation and for being such gracious hosts. Needless to say, we could not resist the temptation to do some shopping while in the store and took home some memorabilia of our own. The store holds many irresistible treasures and if ever in the area, you should stop in and at least have a look of your own. Perhaps you’ll even catch a glimpse of one of its permanent residents.
