Brief Property Description:

A two-story colonial home built about 1862. The home is located at 2815 Oakland Gravel Road in Columbia, Missouri and has recently been renovated and opened as a bed and breakfast. It is one of the few Civil War area home still remaining in the mid-west.

House/Property History:

The property was first acquired by Richard Cave in 1825 and then became the property of William and Francis Suggett. The Suggett's sold the home to David and Harriet Guitar in 1859. They were slave owners and David was a Captain in the Confederate Army. In 1903 the home was sold to Nathan King and again around 1910 to M. M. Pumphrey. In 1914, M. M. Pumphrey switched land with Abe Ridgeway. Sometime before the house was sold again in 1939, the home was rented by a family named Woodsen. In 1939, the house was purchased by Missouri author Ward Allison Dorrance who nicknames the property as "Confederate Hill." The home was purchased in 1956 by B. D. and Lala Walters who redecorated the house in 1950's style and sold the home to Harvey & Miriam McCaleb. In 1993, the McCalebs worked to get the home on the National Historic Homes Register. The home once again saw new owners in 1997 when it was purchased by Jeff Bradley who intended to turn the house into a wedding reception complex. Funding fell through and the Premier Bank seized ownership. Under their ownership, the house fell into disrepair until it was purchased by Noel and Mary Ann Crowson in 2002 who have restored it to its former glory. Current Owner Reportings:

The Guitar House Bed and Breakfast is currently occupied by its caretaker and tour guide. She said that she has had no paranormal experiences in the house since moving there after restoration was completed. However, past reports about the house's hauntings have included the sound of footsteps on the stairway and the sounds of music coming from the music room downstairs.

Reported Findings and Experiences:

· MPR was originally invited to the house to do some grave dowsing for a news segment on KOMU Channel 8 News in Columbia, MO. It was too dark to complete the grave dowsing on the night of the investigation, so Brenda returned on November 6 to complete the task. This segment aired on November 16th. During grave dowsing, Brenda found a total of 36 graves located in the garden area south of the house. Of those graves, 10 were identified as adult males, 5 adult females, 2 young males, 6 young females, 4 male toddlers, 2 female toddlers, 1 infant male, 1 infant female and 4 horses. Six of these graves were located just outside the west wall of the garden area.. On the night of the investigation during Misty's reading, she correctly stated that 6 graves would be found outside the walled area. She felt they were the graves of slaves. At the time of her reading, this area had not been checked. All the graves were buried in a Christian manner (feet pointed east) with the exception of 4 male graves who were buried side by side, with their feet pointing west.

· MOKU also attended the investigation and put together a news story of their "Haunted Show-Me Scary" Halloween special which aired on October 28th. This news segment can be viewed at http://www.komu.com/html/htmlfall2004/showmescary102804.html

· 2 EVPs were recorded during the investigation. One consisted of 2 male voices in the gray room. Just before this EVP was recorded the news crew had shown Misty a photo of David Guitar, Jr., who reportedly had been shot in the home. Misty was leading the news crew upstairs to the room where she thought the shooting occurred when two male voices were recorded as Misty and the news crew ascended the stairway saying "We Are Here."

Followed by another male voice saying "Stop Them."

The 2nd EVP was recorded in the music room. It sounded like the voice of a young male saying, "Thick."

· Extreme temperature changes were felt by all in the gray room when Misty was conducting a reading with David Guitar, Jr.

Psychic Readings:

MISTY

· There is a little old man who used to sit on the front porch. He had a habit of doing snuff.

· A little black boy ran up to me and called me "Miss Lady, Miss Lady." He is about 8 years old. The little black boy is all over the place. He runs around everywhere. His name was either Jerry or Jerome. Slave records show that David Guitar purchased an 8 year old slave boy named Jerome.

· There is a cemetery of about 6 slave graves. This is separate from another cemetery on the property.

· Some soldiers hid in the basement. They were wounded and were brought to the house to heal. They would move on after they were well enough to travel.

· I felt someone looking at me. When I turned around, I saw a short man with a mustache and beard. He was kind of balding. He had a health problem of some kind and may be the one who I saw sitting on the front porch. After being shown a photo of Odon Guitar, Misty identified him as the same man she saw.

· A woman walks up and down the stairs. She's carrying stuff. She must have been a housekeeper here at some time. She also had a son and her husband was a caretaker of the grounds. Besides the Guitars who had household servants, the Ridgeway family had a live-in housekeeper who had a son.

· Another female is here who is short and stocky. She is very calm.

· I see lots of children in this house at one time, at least 7 or 8 of them. David Guitar and his wife were the parents of 10 children.

· People watched out the windows constantly, watching for soldiers. Lots of people came and went.

· A man who stayed in the gray room stabbed a teacher. History reports that David Guitar stabbed a man in 1867 over an argument concerning political matters. He was a professor at the University of Missouri.

· 4 or 5 kids shared this room at one time (gray room). The girls stayed in another room. This was the boys room. One of the boys died. He was killed. An older boy died of pneumonia.

· Someone fell down the stairs.

· Something has changed upstairs. The girls room was located where the current manager's quarters are. The housekeeper also had a room back there. One was the housekeeper's room and the other is where her son slept. This was sometime in the 1920's. The Ridgeways occupied the house between 1914-1939 and had a housekeeper and her son living with them.

· After Misty was shown a picture of David Guitar, Jr, she felt the need to go up to the Gray Room. After entering the room, she engaged in a conversation with him concerning a shooting that resulted in his death which has long been a question among Columbia residents on rather the shooting was accidental or a suicide. He did it in this room. He had gotten into a fight with someone. He used his brother's gun. It was an accident. They were playing around and he shot himself. It was not intentional. David Jr.'s father wanted him to marry someone. Her name was Myra Hickman. He didn't want to. He wasn't attracted to women. He was more attracted to men, but he never acted on that. Him and his father had been fighting over the idea of the marriage.

· There are 5 active ghosts here.

JOYCE

· I see a wide staircase in the house. Someone who lived here was crippled. This was in the 1800's. He had to crawl up the stairs. He would leave his wheelchair at the bottom of the steps and crawl up them. Once he got to the top, he turned right onto a landing to get into his bedroom.

· 2 of the bedrooms have ghosts in them. One has a woman ghost. The other room has the ghosts of 3 children. One is a boy and the other 2 are girls. The woman was a housekeeper here. The Guitars had household servants and the Ridgeway family had a live-in housekeeper.

· There used to be a slave cabin behind the house.

· I see both Confederate and Union here. There was a meeting somewhere on the land. Quantrell was here at one time for one of these meetings. The family that lived here tried to remain neutral but they were Southern sympathizers. David Guitar served as a Captain in the Confederate Army while his brother, Odon, was a General in the Union Army.

· A black woman stands on the porch.

· They hung a man here.

· There are 5 people buried on the property.

· I see a lady with dark hair and dark eyes. She's wearing either a blue or peach colored gown (she shows me both.) She wore her hair pulled back in a bun.

· There were lots of people in and out of the house. Lots of entertaining was done here.

· There was a lovely black woman who was a housekeeper here.

· I see a man who is about 55 yrs old. He has dark hair with gray along the sides and dark eyes. He smoked a pipe. He was a member of a family who lived here. He got thrown from a horse and was injured. He lived several years after the accident. He was married to a very short woman. Her name was Annie. She had black hair, dark eyes and was of Native American descent. They had two children. She lived a long time after her husband died. His name was Edward.

· A family lived here in the 1950's. Someone had polio.

· The gray room has three spirits. There is a female there. I sense fear, sorrow and death in this room. She was an elderly lady. She died of congestive heart failure in this room. Something to do with her chest. A young boy came to visit her in this room. He was about 8 or 9 years old. The woman's name was Mavis or Mabel. This was in the 1800's. She's the lady I see on the porch. She had a portrait done. She was married to a tall, slender man who was very distinguished looking. He had dark hair and made part of his money in the railroad.

· There was a nursery somewhere in the house.

· One of the ladies that lived here, had her parents living here with her. One of her parents died in 1897 and the other died in 1902. She shows me their obituaries.

· Mavis's husband was involved in an accident. A man was shot in the back. Her husband was suspected of the crime. It had a connection to the Civil War, the Confederacy.

· One man who lived here was involved in race horses. He raced them in St. Louis and Kentucky. David Guitar's son James raised horses. It is unknown rather they were involved in racing. Grave dowsing indicated there were 4 horses buried in the cemetery.

· Odon lived here. He considered himself a lady's man. He said he liked fast horses and fast women. He didn't care what color they were. He didn't fight in many battles although he claimed he did. He was married and had 8 children. One was stillborn or died in infancy or around the age of 2. He had money. He lived about 5 or 10 miles away after he moved out on his own. The caretaker confirmed that Odon considered himself a lady's man. She also stated that Odon and his wife had 7 children and but did not know if they had bore any stillborn children or had one die in infancy. Odon and his wife did live about 5-10 miles from the house.

· There are more spirits in the gray room than in any other room in the house.

· There was a confrontation here in the gray room. A gentleman died as a result. This was in 1891 or 1892. Someone wanted to borrow money and the other didn't want to loan it. The 2 men were not related. The argument was over a horse that they had invested in. The one man killed the other man in this room. He was shot in the heart. They buried him near the mill. The man was a large man with dark red hair that curled out from underneath a Confederate hat that he wore. David Guitar is the one who shot him. Why he did it up here in this room, I don't know. He tells me it's none of my business. No one knew about this killing. The man was a drifter. He couldn't come up with the money he promised.

· David and his wife had a daughter who died in her teens or early 20's. She has brown hair and hazel eyes. She was slender and became very ill. She died here. This may be someone else's child. She may be the daughter of the woman who weeps in this room.

· The Missouri room had lots of children in it. I see 2 or 3 beds. There were more children's rooms in the back of the house. There was also a servant's room in the back of the house. The servant did not die here but she comes here to visit.

· I hear lots of children's laughter in the Missouri room.

KATHY

· I heard the name of Anna or Annabelle. I saw a black woman with a rag around her head.

· I saw a black man who was small in stature and humped over a little bit. He was wearing suspenders. He had on shorter pants and worn out shoes. He was inside a building where there were vegetables and wash tubs. He said he also took care of the horses.

· There was a tree on the property that made me feel sick to my stomach when I got near it. The energy it gave off was high. I also felt a dull pain in my right side around my lower ribs when I was near it.

· Heard "Ya'll comin' around here?" I felt that said around the side yard where the big rocks are now.

· Heard someone say "Number 13" and "Why ya stopping, Bill?"

· I saw them getting off their horses up by the gateway and holding their reins while looking at the house. They are dressed in gray. They have a lot of respect for those that are inside the house. David Guitar was in the Confederate Army which probably accounts for the men dressed in gray.

· On the front porch, I saw two high-backed rockers. The backs had 3 board centers.

· I saw women dressed in long gowns and fancy hairdos going into the house. I also heard fiddle music like there was some kind of celebration taking place. There were lots of buggies in a circle drive.

· In the outbuilding, I saw more vegetables and tubs. They looked like turnips or potatoes. Also it looked like tobacco was hanging. A black man was in there. He's in charge of the horses and visitors when they arrive.

· Felt a female presence outside and heard some children giggling.

· I see riders standing around waiting for the people inside. They had tied their horses to the trees and fence. The men were polite and mannerly. I heard someone say, "Hold it or Stop it Bill."

· I heard someone say, "If you say so, Missy."

· While over by the tree again that made me feel sick earlier, I felt a sharp pain in my right lung, just to the right of my heart. I bent over and felt like my back was rounded and I had been hurt for awhile.

MPR Summary

· MPR concluded from evidence collected and the reading of our team psychics, that the Guitar House is haunted by 4-5 ghosts. However, we feel these ghosts are not in anyway distressed, are peaceful and have chosen to remain at the house by choice, not due to any tragic events. Since the Bed & Breakfast has just recently opened for overnight guests perhaps more evidence and reports of hauntings will surface in the future.

· MPR would like to extend a "thank you" to Kendra, the caretaker, the owners of the Guitar House and the news crew of KOMU for the opportunity to investigate such a lovely and historical home. If ever passing through Columbia, Missouri, we highly recommend that you stop in at the Guitar House, take the tour and/or stay overnight in one of the beautifully renovated rooms. Who knows…you might just meet up with a ghost during your visit.
