Brief Home and Property Description:
A 2 story country home built in either the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. Downstairs consisted of kitchen, master bedroom, living room and bathroom. 2 additional bedrooms were upstairs.
Home & Community History:
Caldwell County was once a part of Ray County. For many years after the organization of Ray County, the territory that now includes Caldwell County was unsettled. Over it roamed migratory Indians and white hunters but it was not considered for homes because it had too much prairie land.
The settling of the community came about because of the "Mormon Occupation" which mainly occurred between 1836 and 1839. Joseph Smith, the founder of the church of Latter Day Saints or Mormons, as commonly called, was living in New York when he had a revelation which told him to dig up gold plates. These gold plates, written in mystic characters, contained the Book of Mormon, which gave a new religion to the New World. Smith’s preaching gained many converts and they first settled in Kirkland, Ohio. Because of opposition to their religion, these converts moved to Jackson County, Missouri but soon met opposition there also. They were driven from Jackson County into Clay County and remained there until three brothers decided to settle in what is now known as Caldwell County in 1832. Other families began to follow to escape the persecution. In 1836, an arrangement was made with the state legislature by which the entire county was to be given to the Mormons. Ray County was divided and two new counties were formed: Daviess County to the north was reserved for Gentile settlers (settlers who were non-Mormon) and Caldwell County, formed from the center of Ray County was reserved for the Mormons. The Mormons established their headquarters at their church and by 1836, the city contained over 4000 people.
In 1838, serious troubles developed between the Gentiles and the Mormons within Caldwell County and surrounding counties. These quarrels led to what is known as the "Mormon War". Skirmishes broke out throughout Caldwell County between the Mormons and Gentiles and on Oct 30, a skirmish broke out which resulted in the death of 17 Mormons. These dead were buried in an unfinished well. The next day, the Mormon militia surrendered the city to the state militia and the church leaders were taken as prisoner. After the surrender, the Gentiles demanded the removal of the Mormons from the entire state and the Mormons quickly sold off their property at cheap prices and left for Illinois which was their home until they settled permanently in Utah. By 1839, most Mormons had left Caldwell County and the city they developed dwindled away. The population of Caldwell County fell to 1000 people but that number was soon increased by the coming of new settlers who were able to buy the land at prices way below their market value.
The Mormon cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county. It was thought to have contained 200 graves but only four of those names were kept. It was learned during the investigation that the tombstones from this cemetery were removed and used as a basement foundation by a local farmer when he was building his home. That farm home has since been bulldozed along with the tombstones that made up it’s foundation.
During the Civil War, Caldwell County was occupied by both Unionists and Southern Sympathizers. Many southern sympathizers were killed by the Unionists when they refused to pledge loyalty to the Union. Although no major battles occurred in Caldwell County, there were two notable skirmishes.
After the Civil War, the railroad began an advertising campaign which brought the railroad to Caldwell County along with new settlers. The growth of the county has continued although much of the area still remains farmland today.
Current Owner Reportings:
· Occasionally hears the sound of a baby crying.
· Often hears what sounds like the voices of three men who are either arguing or upset about something.
· Has seen a bright orb-like light hovering over baby’s crib.
· Female homeowner has been touched on the head on numerous occasions.
· Hears lots of talking going on after everyone has retired for the night.
· Has trouble sleeping, sometimes awakened by vivid dreams.
· Has seen a man sitting on the stairway.
· Young son once made a comment that he saw the same man in the yard that he sees in his room.
· Female homeowner and sister felt a very strong presence in one of the fields near the house. Upon taking pictures, they captured ghost mist in two photographs. In one of these photographs, the mist appears to take the shape of the face and forepaws of a saber-toothed tiger. The 2nd mist photograph appears to have captured the tail and hind-quarter of the tiger. (See photos submitted by homeowner below.)
Reported Findings and Experiences:
· Video camera shut off by itself shortly after turning it on. The battery was fully charged
· Brenda felt a presence in the kitchen and took some consecutive photographs which showed a spirit energy on left side of one photo, followed by the next photo showing a spirit energy retreating. Several pictures were taken of the same location trying to duplicate the previous photos, but man-made causes were ruled out.
· 6 EVPs were recorded. Two were of a male voice who said, "Is Time Gone?" and "Hopeless". Both of these were recorded early in the investigation. The other 4 EVPs were of a female voice. When Joyce was talking about the accident in the loading shoot, a female voice said "Eleven’s The One That Did It". Many farm animals that are raised for slaughter are tagged with numbers before they are sent to market. Was the female trying to tell us that the animal responsible for the accident was known as number eleven? Two other EVPs of the same female voice were recorded saying, "Too Bad" and either "Oh Well" or "Caldwell". The investigation was conducted in Caldwell County. It was difficult to decipher exactly what this EVP was saying. We’d be happy to hear your opinions. The last EVP recorded of the female voice was recorded just prior to the clearing after the team decided to conduct the clearing in the living room. The voice said, "Let’s Go".
· 6 orbs were recorded on video during a 45 min taping session of the kitchen. This is the same area in which all 6 EVPs were recorded.
Psychic Readings:
· There is a woman here named Louise. Her full name may be Peggy Louise or Maggie Louise, but she went by the name Louise. She died here. She also took care of her mother whose name may have been Maggie or Margaret. She used to sing and hum hymns. She also milked cows and they had some hogs. She is worried about a butcher knife that she lost in the yard. She doesn’t want the children to find it.. (Homeowner was able to confirm that a woman named Louise was a former homeowner.)
· A man was upset about something that happened with a trailer.
· A man was badly hurt around a loading shoot. He shows me his arm which is injured from the elbow down.
· A man who lived here once owned big eared mules. His name was William but they called him Bill. He was a very outspoken man. He had at least 4 children. (Homeowner was able to confirm that one of the past homeowner’s was named William.)
· Someone’s hip hurts really, really bad. They can hardly climb the stairs because of arthritis. This may have been an older woman who was kept upstairs.
· One of the children who lived here was named Polly or Peggy. Her room was the same room that the children have now but there is was no sickness or sadness in that room.
· The storage room was where the older woman stayed. She loved jewelry and shows me a box of glass beaded jewelry which she loved. She had to wear it whenever she went somewhere. The storage room feels good too. No sadness and nothing bad in there.
· The past owners were very religious.
· The strongest energy here is the energy of the man who owned the mules.
· There was a man here named Raymond.
· I’m not picking up any Civil War or Mormon activity on this particular piece of property. It was all around but not right here. I’m seeing another house that was nearby but I’m not seeing any big settlement here.
· A man is here. His last name begins with the letter M, something sounding like Milford, Malford or Miller. (Past deed records showed previous owners named Markwell and Miller.)
Clearing:
A clearing was performed and homeowners have reported back that all seems peaceful now and that they are able to sleep through the night.
